ProgrammeThe conference aims to bring together researchers, professionals and students from Brazil and abroad to discuss the right to memory and the right to privacy in the light of information technology, the increased visibility of individuals and institutions in the network and the antagonistic possibilities of the dialectical relationship that creates possible confrontations existing in contemporary society, particularly around access to information and to documents. | |

Summary: The networking of individuals and institutions places into the research agenda of the archival field a number of issues that still need to be explored, especially those related to personal archives and their place in memory. This session will analyze the identification processes of collections relevant to society that build the collective memory, the policies of access to personal archives that gain visibility on the network, the expectation of free access to documents created in private life according access to information legislation, the changes that are happening in the relationship between individuals and institutions, individual and collective rights and their impact on the construction of memory and access, the roles of institutions that retain custody of personal collections of cultural interest, and mediation initiatives seeking access while keeping in mind the sensitive zone between the public and the private. |

| 9h30-13h00 | Plenary: "The right to privacy: access, limits and parameters." Summary: The protection of the privacy of the individual has been a subject of concern for professionals engaged in the acquisition, organization, description and access to documents produced in private life. These professionals traditionally held a leading role in the definition of access, considering preservation reasons, protection of the dignity and integrity, and the innate values of the producer or of its interlocutors. The process of passing the documents produced in the private life of individuals to an institution with a commitment to the preservation and access to archives for a long time followed practices scarcely regulated. The commitments made in the past between the institutions and the successors of these producers often do not match the expectations of demand for access or of demand for protection of privacy in the light of contemporary issues of free access. In this session, from an interdisciplinary perspective, taking into account the legal provisions, institutionalized practices and characteristics of personal archives, we intend to contribute to the formulation of questions and encourage dialogue that involves the approach of archives with society, the right to privacy and access to memory and professional and institutional strategies.
